Nathan Larsen

Principal and Co-Director

Nathan Larsen is a dedicated and experienced New York City educator, and for the past 18 years, he has been a passionate advocate for students, families, and teachers. He has served communities in the Bronx as a special education teacher of both high school and middle school students, and as an assistant principal leading schools’ work on performance assessment and real world learning. Throughout his career, he has led and nurtured schools and classrooms where complex thinking is developed through meaningful, authentic learning experiences. Working with students at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School in the Bronx affirmed what Nathan knows about students: that they learn best when they engage deeply and collaboratively with real-world issues that resonate with their personal interests and lives. Working closely with community-based organizations, including Children’s Aid, and youth development organizations,  including Rocking the Boat, Beam Center, the Educational Video Center, and the Center for Urban Pedagogy, Nathan has developed a wide network of organizations aligned to his passion for nurturing the capacity of our young people to share their extraordinary voices both in and out of school (To view an example of this effort from 2021, click here.) He began teaching in 2006 and holds master’s degrees from Columbia University, Mercy College, and Bank Street College of Education. Outside school, Nathan enjoys spending time with his wife and two teenage children, exploring our city’s parks, museums, and outdoor celebrations.
