6th graders: Incoming 6th graders who live or attend school anywhere in Brooklyn or Queens are eligible to apply to Lyons. Students who list Lyons as their first choice will receive top priority. You will be informed of your status in mid-May. There are opportunities to apply through an appeal if you do not get into Lyons when the decisions are sent.
9th graders: Incoming 9th graders city wide should list Lyons Community School (L39A) on their High School application form.
We have a limited number of seats available for students entering in grades other than 6th and 9th. If you would like to enter Lyons in grade 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 or midyear in any grade, please call or email (firstname.lastname@example.org) the school for more information.
Staff: If you are interested in applying to Lyons, please submit your resume, cover letter and statement of education philosophy to lyons(at)lyonscommunityschool.org.
Job Posting: Lyons is a small, progressive, unscreened New York City public secondary school with a liberal arts focus. We are located in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and are a member of the NYS Performance Standards Consortium. All students do Roundtable presentations in all their core subjects twice a year, and high school students complete graduation level Performance Based Assessment Task (PBAT) requirements rather than most Regents. Our academic program includes inquiry-based projects, weekly Field Studies classes where students travel to different sites across the city and skills instruction to meet the needs of students.
We are a Restorative Justice school, focusing on repairing harm, rather than punishing offenders when determining next steps when issues arise. We know that the majority of our work to diminish harm involves daily community and relationship building, and clear, supportive systems and expectations. All teachers also work as advisors supporting students’ social-emotional and academic journeys. We seek staff members who are specifically interested in working with our young people and who are committed to always looking for yet another way to support our students to learn, grow and become their best selves.
We are not certain which subject areas we will need teachers and staff for the coming year, but want to find people deeply interested and committed to working in our community. All interested people, please apply. Specifically we anticipate need in the following areas depending on budget: ELA, mathematics, special education, ENL and possibly an Assistant Principal, interest in teaching middle school a huge plus. Teachers must be NYS certified.
Please send your resume and cover letter to email@example.com. If you have a statement of purpose, send it along as well.
