FacilitiesThe Lyons Community School is located on the second floor of the William J Gaynor Campus in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In the 2008-09 school year there will be four schools in the building, but by 2009-10 only the three permanent schools, Lyons, The Green School – Academy for Environmental Careers, and Young Woman’s Leadership School – Brooklyn, will remain in the building.
Our beautiful and historic building was built in 1936, and has been the home to I.S. 49 since its inception. We share a library, auditorium, two gymnasiums and cafeteria with the other schools in the building. The auditorium was recently renovated, and the library is soon to follow. The building has a substantial capital grant from City Councilmember Diana Reyna to renovate our library space. We will be working with the architects and planners to create our new library space during the 2008-09 school year. In addition our building council won an additional $200,000 grant for books and other materials for our library from New Visions. As well, the DOE is about to begin a 12 million dollar construction project in the building that will bring three state-of-the-art high school science laboratories into the building.
Within our school, besides regular classroom spaces, we have a dance space and art room. Councilmember Reyna has also given us funding to making improvements and additions to both spaces. |
